Collaborative product selection with teachers
Custer partnered with West Ottawa Public Schools in the district’s initiative to revitalize learning spaces at North and South High Schools.
Completed in the summers of 2023 and 2022, respectively, this project involved a range of services provided by Custer, including furniture, installation, project management, and Custer-led design.
West Ottawa Public Schools faced the challenge of outdated furniture in two well-maintained High School buildings. Seeking a comprehensive solution, they collaborated with Custer to create a “kit of parts” for teaching staff.
Each teacher had three optional layouts, including lounge pieces and teacher setups.
Our team provided pilots, allowing teachers to vote on their favorite pieces. From these insights, three optional layouts were developed, offering flexibility and personalization for teachers at both locations.
The project incorporated modern and versatile solutions, including Steelcase Verb tables, Smith Systems Elemental Petal student tables, Smith Systems Flow Form lounge, and Steelcase Big Lounge.
Working with a great client across two expansive buildings, the result is a transformation of learning spaces that meet both schools’ personalized needs.
The collaborative approach, from piloting furniture options to developing customizable layouts, ensures a dynamic and engaging environment for both staff and students.
