Redesigned workspace for employee well-being

Skytron recently teamed up with Custer to transform and reimagine their corporate headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The renovation was driven by a pressing need to accommodate new hires and modernize an office that had remained unchanged for nearly two decades. Recognizing the importance of attracting and retaining talent, Skytron sought to create a dynamic environment that would encourage employees to spend more time in the office.
To achieve this, they partnered with Custer to develop a hybrid workspace where most private offices and workstations would be free address, allowing for greater flexibility and adaptability. The new space introduced a variety of hybrid and shared offices, along with additional collaboration spaces designed for team projects, virtual meetings, and focused work. Several small to medium-sized conference rooms were strategically placed throughout the office, enhancing the functionality of the space.
The showroom work area was opened up, with shared collaboration spaces added along the windows to ensure that all employees could enjoy natural sunlight. The café area was expanded and upgraded to offer a range of seating options and additional amenities, creating a welcoming environment for relaxation, customer visits, and informal meetings.
The introduction of height-adjustable workstations and soft seating throughout the office marked a significant change from the previous setup, which only had a few lounge chairs in the lobby.
This redesign was important as it provided employees with more options and control over their work environment, allowing them to choose from various postures and seating arrangements.
Skytron’s transformation was a collaborative effort, with substantial buy-in and input from its employees. This approach helped generate enthusiasm and energy around the office upgrades, ensuring a smooth transition to the new workspace.
The selection of products that Custer provided for the newly reimagined space includes Steelcase, AMQ, Blu Dot, Enwork, Simii, and Sit On It.
The new office environment at Skytron stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and employee engagement in creating a modern, flexible workspace that meets the needs of a growing company.
