Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, a Michigan-based Rehabilitation Healthcare Network, partnered with both Enviah and Custer to realign its fifth floor non-clinical space.
As one of the fastest growing rehabilitation hospitals in the U.S., space is a highly coveted asset, needed to serve Mary Free Bed’s growing number of patients. The newly incorporated hoteling space model allows the operations to be scaled and accommodate the increased need for providers and support staff, without the costly expense of a new building.
Enviah, a strategic consulting first and long-time partner of Mary Free Bed, implemented its Office Reset Plan through design strategy using evidence-based research to develop the program. During the analysis phase, Enviah discovered that 79% of Mary Free Bed’s non-clinical staff did not require dedicated office space, which ultimately reduced the executive office suite’s space need by 50%.
Working closely with Enviah, Custer provided furniture solutions to enhance the effectiveness of hoteling and touchdown spaces for hybrid work throughout this newly renovated space.
Custer has worked with Mary Free Bed for many years in executing a set of standards for both products and finishes that will be replicated throughout its facilities creating a unified brand aesthetic not only from department to department, but from building to building.
The reimagination of the space empowered the Mary Free Bed staff to operate in a more collaborative and efficient manner to better provide care for the heart of the organization: its patients.
This new format moves us from our ‘desk’ to an entire floor of ‘alternative work settings’ that offer us a variety from which to choose, based upon our style of work at that moment.

Mary Free Bed plans to renovate the remainder of their nonclinical office spaces in a similar approach to increase productivity, efficiency and effectively reduce overall costs. The executive and administrative floor will become the template for future spaces completed within the Professional Building.
This newly renovated executive suite now allows for optimal collaboration and streamlined operations, resulting in a 50% reduction in unnecessary singular office spaces.
