Health Facilities Management – Breaking Away from Institutional Design
In a story from Health Facilities Management, a publication from the American Hospital Association, read up about how furniture manufacturers are designing for function and safety to meet the needs of the healthcare environment. Four trends stand apart to represent what people and institutions really need – ergonomics, strength, cleanability and family-friendly modular designs.
Cleanability and infection control are two of the most pressing issues to consider for furniture design and durability.
“While the physical design of a product to facilitate effective cleaning is reasonably accomplished, the cleaning products and chemicals themselves are an area of contention,” said Nathan Chandler of Steelcase Health. “With more interest in environmental sustainability, there is growing tension between the use of chemicals and cleaning protocols that do not align sustainability objectives with the long-term durability of many fabrics and product finishes. This continues to be an area for broader discussion and education.”
