Fostering Soft Skills in Students
The qualities most desired by employers, according to Gallup Business Journal, are communication skills, teamwork and empathy, combating ambiguity and overcoming obstacles. Educators at LaSalle College in Montréal, Québec, noted improvement in the development of students’ soft skills after implementing an active learning initiative, classroom and tools on campus.
The school began its journey in active learning in 2011 by introducing a colorful classroom and workshops for teachers.
While having a more colorful classroom was a good start, it wasn’t enough. LaSalle wanted more spaces designed to help students engage in their own learning.
In 2016, the school applied for and was later granted the Steelcase Education Active Learning Center Grant.
